New Kane judges bring work ethic, wide experienceJan 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Two new associate judges recently were named for the 16th Judicial Circuit. Alice Tracy and Elizabeth Flood, who have served as Kane County assistant state's attorneys for more than 30 years combined, will be assigned to one of the branch court locations in either Aurora, Elgin or St. Charles by the end of the month.

Congrats to Aurora on murder-free milestone Jan 6, 2013 12:00 AM
If no news is good news, then this is great news. Aurora, the state's second largest city, marked a milestone last week: the city went an entire calendar year without a murder for the first time since 1946, when its population was just 48,000.

North Aurora man first Hispanic judge in 16th CircuitNov 30, 2012 12:00 AM
Rene Cruz, an Aurora attorney, has been selected as the newest associate judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit. Cruz starts Monday and takes over in divorce court for Robert Janes, who retired in October. Cruz is the first Hispanic judge in Kane County history.

John G. Dalton of Elgin is the newest judge in Kane County. Voters picked the 51-year-old Democrat and Elgin Community College trustee Tuesday over Republican John Walters, a former Elgin city council member who was appointed to the bench earlier this year. Dalton had run for judge before but lost.

Brawka first female chief judge of 16th Circuit Nov 2, 2012 12:00 AM
Circuit Judge Judith Brawka is named chief judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit. She starts Saturday, and is the first woman to hold the position. "I've been dedicated to the Kane (judicial) system" throughout her career, making it her top priority, Brawka said. "I intend to be that way as chief judge too."

An Elgin letter to the editor: Fairness — that quality that we all look for in judges — can only come from jurists who are both experienced in the intricacies of the law and intelligent enough to apply their knowledge to the specifics of a given case. The sustained attentive excellence of John Dalton's career so far has convinced me that he is the best choice for Kane County Resident Judge, 2nd Subcircuit.

An Elgin letter to the editor: Simply put, most of us are challenged by some of the positions requesting our votes in the next election. However, our votes to confirm the Supreme Court's unanimous decision to appoint John Walters as 16th Circuit Court Judge is completely logical.

An Elgin letter to the editor: Kane County judge candidate John Dalton also is a a deacon at his Elgin church who rarely misses Sunday worship. In that capacity he serves about 15 families, ministering to them when needed. John also was elected by the congregation to represent us on the Church Council as an at-large member. He is a valuable member of this group, and his wise counsel is important in guiding the church.

An Elgin letter to the editor: I want to know that the person elected to be judge is trustworthy and will follow the law. I've known John Dalton for many years now and have always found him to be fair and treat others with the respect they deserve. Already a trustee at Elgin Community College, becoming a judge is his opportunity to give back even more to a community that he feels has given a tremendous amount to him.

His understanding of the complexities that underscore each case brought before him. His willingness to dit into that, aid him in reaching the best solution for the person accused, as well as their family and the community.

Kane CASA healing garden a community project May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
CASA Kane County is in the stretch run of creating a $1.5 million endowment, and part of it includes building a "healing garden" on the west side of the old courthouse on Third Street in Geneva. Constructon will begin July 1 and wrap up in about six weeks. People and businesses can sponsor benches and buy bricks.

Quick ‘verdict’ means cameras could be coming to Kane courtrooms May 6, 2012 12:00 AM
When a committee studying whether to allow cameras in Kane County courtrooms retreated behind closed doors last week, it was a little like a jury going to deliberate. In this case, the deliberations led to a decision to move forward with plans allowing cameras and other recording devices to capture court proceedings.

John Walters won the Republican nomination for a residential judges seat serving the 16th Judicial Circuits second subcircuit in Elgin, according to unofficial results Tuesday. With 2,838 votes, Walters defeated fellow Elgin resident John Hurlbut, who received 1,967 votes, for the partys nomination to a judicial post signed into law last September by Gov. Pat Quinn. He will face Democrat John Dalton in the November general election.

As a fellow attorney, I have had the opportunity to work on various matters where we have been on the opposite side of the table. John has always been ethical in dealing with legal matters, and his knowledge of the law and competence supersedes that of most attorneys.
