Summer Haiku Project delivers an outlet for West Chicago creativity

The West Chicago Cultural Arts Commission reached out to the community earlier this year soliciting poetry for a public art display of yard signs that would convey thoughtful messages, spread encouragement, and lift spirits suffering from the fatigue of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

This week, 39 Haiku yard signs were delivered and installed for community members who offered to display a sign on their front lawn.

There are currently nine signs still available for those interested in being a host location.

Those wishing to host a Haiku yard sign may apply at www.westchicago.org.

The commission hopes that the signs will engage the community, as did the butterflies of 2019, and get people circulating throughout the community to enjoy the poems and the summer season.

A simple, interactive map has been created to point people in the direction of each sign, however an exact address is not given in order to get people moving and to add an element of the excitement of a scavenger hunt.
