McHenry County Health Department offers wellness screenings and diabetes self-management classes

The McHenry County Department of Health is conducting low-cost wellness screenings open to all McHenry County residents.

From 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, a screening will be offered at the Johnsburg Public Library, 3000 Johnsburg Road.

Screening appointments also are available on the first Wednesday of each month at MCDH in Woodstock.

Appointments are offered at $25 for a cholesterol and blood glucose test. An optional $10 A1C test may be added when given in conjunction with these tests.

In October, a free six-week workshop for adults who have been diagnosed with diabetes or who care for someone with diabetes will be offered by the health department.

The weekly "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" self-management program was developed by Stanford University and focuses on improving physical activity, self-care, nutrition, and individual action steps. Classes will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 3 through Nov. 7, at the MCDH offices in Crystal Lake, 100 N. Virginia St.

Each session will help participants set weekly goals, brainstorm ways to reach those goals, and provide diabetes management resources.

To register for the workshop, visit www.mcdh.info or call Carol at (815) 334-4580.
