'Proverbial Opera' summer sermon series continues July 14

At Elgin's First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Rick Carlson continues the nine-part summer message series titled "Proverbial Opera," an exploration of King Solomon's wisdom illustrated by arias from the world's great operas.

The fifth installment of the series this week will feature tenor Nicholas Metzger of Elgin singing "Una furtiva lagrima" from the early 19th-century Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti opera "L'Elisir d'amore" ("The Elixir of Love"). The aria and its setting helps to illustrate the instruction in Proverbs 10:28.

Each week, a performer sings a selection from the works of Puccini, Mozart, Offenbach and others.

On July 28, tenor Franco Martorana will perform "Vesti la giubba" from the 1892 opera "Pagliacci" by Italian composer Ruggero Leoncavallo.

The series is presented in collaboration with Solange Sior and Fox Valley Lyrical Productions (formerly Soiree Lyrique).

Worship is 9 a.m. at the historic church, 216 E. Highland Ave. in downtown Elgin. The church is handicap accessible.

You can also hear the service at 11 a.m. Sundays on radio WRMN 1410AM.

Free parking is available in the parking deck across the street. For details, visit www.fumcelgin.org or call (847) 741-0038.
