Kane County's annual Recycling Extravaganza returns July 13

Kane County will once again host an annual recycling extravaganza event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 13, behind the Kane County Circuit Clerk's Office at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles. This event does not include shredding.

For the best experience, arrive between 8 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. for optimal service. Do not arrive early, as it creates a pile up before it even opens.

It is recommended that you approach on the northbound side of Randall Road, coming up from Route 38 toward Route 64, so that you can easily turn right into the event at the Kane County Traffic Court building. If you approach on the southbound side of Randall, you may have difficulty turning left into the event site across the oncoming traffic, and the lineup creates a traffic flow problem on Randall.

After recycling, consider stopping by Colonial Café next door for brunch.

Recycling staff ask that you prepare to have material unloaded in this order: electronics; books; and latex paint, with scrap metal, 4-foot fluorescent tubes, batteries, Styrofoam, bikes, helmets, clothes and shoes, all unloaded at the last stop. No business materials; residential only.

Televisions and computer monitors have a recycling fee paid directly to the nonprofit recyclers. It is $25 for screens under 21 inches, measured diagonally across the screen, or $35 for screens, 21 inches and larger, payable by the resident with cash or card. All other electronic items (holiday lights, computers, DVD players, fax machines, printers, copiers, keyboards, mice, cables, receivers, servers, tablets, phones, electronic games, etc.) are free to drop off.

Other items that you can recycle include:

• Batteries: Alkaline batteries - AA, AAA, C, D, 9V and button batteries; or vehicle batteries - car, truck, motorcycle, power sport

• Books: Any age any condition, hard or soft cover

• Bikes in working order or in need of minor repairs, helmets, bike baskets (no rusty bikes or parts)

• Clothes, linens, curtains, paired shoes, hats, ties, belts, purses, backpacks, stuffed animals, plush toys. They must be clean, dry and free of odors. Remove all hangers. Seal in plastic bags.

• Four-foot fluorescent tube lamps and CFLs from residential sources only.

• Styrofoam No. 6 blocks and food service foam. Bring clean sorted materials and it must be kept contained in a bag. (No packing peanuts or Bubble Wrap)

New this year, you can bring scrap metal (aluminum, copper, brass, insulated wire, cast iron, steel, other metals) from residential sources.

Latex paint is nontoxic but difficult to dispose of because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary. Latex and oil paint have a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check latex is $3 a gallon; oil is $8 a gallon. Note that oil-based paints can be taken to Naperville Household Hazardous Waste facility for free.

Household hazardous waste will not be accepted at this event. Carpet, padding, tire and motor oil will not be accepted at this event. Take Bubble Wrap or packing peanuts to UPS or FedEx stores. They will not be accepting mobility devices; try Goodwill. They also are not accepting garden tools or sewing machines. No large household appliances/white goods or Freon-containing appliances.

Note, there will be no confidential document shredding at this event. It will return Aug. 10 and Sept. 14.
