Side Street Studio Arts offers winter art programs

Side Street Studio Arts, 15 Ziegler Court in downtown Elgin, is taking registration for its winter arts programming. Session II will be Feb. 11 to March 24.

The programs include:

• Art History with Jeff Morello from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays for ages 16 or older. A condensed journey of fine art trends within historical time periods, including a video lecture with images. Cost is $110.

• Camera Basics with Doug Hanson will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays for ages 16 or older. This six-week sessions help beginners and intermediate users explore any questions related to your camera. Film or digital, participants will learn all the shooting modes including manual mode and when to use them. You will master exposure and lighting, discuss art and composition, and even spend time in the darkroom. Cost is $125 and includes all supplies.

• Ceramics with Jeff Morello will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages 16 or older. Classes will feature history and explanation of clay properties from raw to permanent pots, as well as simple hand building techniques in slab, coil and hand molding. Wheel-throwing techniques in forming cylinder and ball shapes will be explored. Cost is $150 and includes all supplies.

• Comic Book Art & Design with John French will be 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays for ages 12 or older. This comic illustration course will cover techniques for visual storytelling and formatting, as well as illustration techniques to suit your style. This is a six-week course of 90-minute classes where we introduce the subject and then practice the drawing exercise. Cost is $125 and includes all supplies.

• Intro to Drawing with John French will be 1 to 2 p.m. Saturdays for ages 12 or older. From drawing mechanics and proportion to life drawing, build a foundation of drawing techniques through this class adding a new technique each session. Cost is $125 and includes all supplies.

• Mural Painting with Hallie Morrison will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays for age 13 or older. Murals are an important form of "artivism" in society (art and activism). To represent the voices that can't be heard in our community, we must make sure they are seen. So, this class will explore how to create murals for social justice with effective designs and messages that we are passionate about. Students will try their hand at artist instructor Hallie Morrison's technique for inlay paper collage into acrylic murals on canvas, as well as explore their own original approaches. Presentations about murals made with marginalized communities in Thailand will be covered, to see ethical and meaningful processes for representing various peoples. The class will collaborate on one large mural on canvas, and students will accomplish their own canvas murals on smaller scales. Cost is $150 and includes all supplies.

• Painting Foundation & Process with Karl Jahnke will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays for age 14 or older. Led by artist Karl Jahnke, this class is a study in the foundation and process of creating a painting. Through guided projects, students will gain confidence in their work and shed some of the preciousness that can limit enjoyment and creativity. Students will also learn about color schemes, painting from a reference and brush selection. Some basic familiarity with acrylic paints is recommended. Cost is $125 and includes all supplies.

• Screen Printing with Freddrick Wimms will be 5:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays for age 14 or older. Learn the fundamentals of screen printing in this crash course on developing basic skills and understanding of the screen printing process. Create a simple design and explore the printing possibilities from printing personal original artwork on paper to printing on the beloved T-shirt and any other swag you can dream. Work alongside artist/owner Freddrick D. Wimms of Style Art Play in learning and practicing through screen printing process from start to finish. Cost is $200.
