Chicago Jewish Funerals celebrates 21 years serving the community

Since 1997, Chicago Jewish Funerals has provided compassionate, concierge-level service with a special sensitivity to Jewish customs and traditions.

"Year after year, people come to us because they know we will be there for them," said founder David I. Jacobson. "That not only speaks for our service but speaks for our philosophy, which is being a part of the community and being there for the families here in their time of need."

Chicago Jewish Funerals is independently owned and operated in Chicagoland. The funeral home is committed to making sure that loved ones are buried in a way that is consistent in the way they lived. "We have restored the dignity and compassion to this industry, and we are humbled that many people trust us to serve their families," noted Jacobson.

In a recent interview with Voyage Chicago, Jacobson talked about starting his family-owned business 20 years ago with a "sturdy moral compass." His company responds 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Jacobson and every member of his staff have missed significant events in their personal lives to serve those who call upon them.

"We respond in person," Jacobson said, "in order to assist those who we are privileged to have called us. One must derive satisfaction in helping others or you just will not last. To this day I routinely respond 24 hours a day."

Murray K. of Mid-Beach, Florida, writes in a recent Yelp review, "I have but one complaint about Chicago Jewish Funerals: They only do funerals. They should run the transit system, airlines, hotels, restaurants, and anything else that is complicated and involves customer service."

The business's motto is "The Way It Should Be" and their Website describes why: "It should be, first and foremost, about service. It should be personalized and compassionate. It should be about commitment. It should be from people who work and live right here, in our community. It should be about having a service where you want it: chapel, synagogue, or graveside. It should be about being able to pre-plan for your family. It should be about the way you want to mourn."

Thomas Kenmore, who was teaching a course at Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work on loss, grief and dying, wrote in a May 2018 Yelp review, "I want to thank and admire Chicago Jewish Funerals, David Jacobson and the staff there. Mr. Jacobson came to my class and presented, engaging the graduate students in understanding the depth and sensitivity involved in providing funeral services and helping families through the process of losing a family member. The presentation and discussion were very useful and helped many of the students better understand the complexity of providing funeral services. He helped to 'normalize' the experience, and very effectively represented Chicago Jewish Funerals, demonstrating the flexibility and sensitivity of their work."
