VFW seeks 'Voice of Democracy' entries

Veterans of Foreign Wars Bloomingdale Post 7539 is encouraging area high school students to participate in the 71st Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition.

Participating students will have a chance to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C., Cmdr. Larry Rogers said.

Students begin by competing at the local post level with a deadline of Oct. 31. Post winners advance to district and then the first-place district winner advances to the state competition. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship.

Nationwide, the VFW provides $2.3 million in scholarships each year.

Students must write and record a 3- to 5-minute essay on the theme "Why My Vote Matters" on an audio cassette tape or audio CD and present their recording, typed essay and entry form at their local VFW Post.

Interested students and teachers should contact Post 7539 VOD Chairman Randy Winter at rdw727@aol.com or visit www.vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youth-scholarships for more details and entry forms.
