College of DuPage offers workshops, classes for older adult lifelong learners

This fall, the Continuing Education program at College of DuPage is offering special programming aimed at lifelong learners, age 50 or older, through its Living Well and Plus 50 series.

Offered through a partnership between College of DuPage and Advocates for Aging Well, the Living Well Series features programs designed to meet the growing needs of the Plus 50 community covering a variety of topics, including estate planning, memory, health and cognition. The following Living Well classes and workshops are being offered during the fall 2018 semester:

• "Exploration of the Brain and Memory": Covering fun, interactive programs designed to keep the brain sharp to in-depth discussions on identifying and working with memory loss, this class will discuss several topics on memory and the brain and how to maintain healthy brain function. It will be 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 to 25. Cost is $25. (HUMNT-0001-602).

• "So You Think You Know Healthcare?": Delve into health care topics, including the cost of care and services, different types of coverage, and addressing family concerns while learning about a variety of health care issues through fun and interactive sessions styled after popular gameshows such as "Jeopardy," "The Price is Right" and "Family Feud." The free program will be 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 11 to 25. Registration is required. (HUMNT-0001-606).

• "Healthy at Home": This workshop is aimed at participants who are downsizing or reorganizing. Attendees will learn techniques for decluttering, estate sale secrets and home modification from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1. Registration is required for this free workshop. (HUMNT-0001-603).

• "Medicare and Medicaid Workshop": This workshop provides important information on Medicaid and Medicare, helping participants to choose the appropriate Medicare plan, demystify Medicaid and learn ways to plan for the future. The free workshop will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 4 or Dec. 6. (HUMNT-0001-601, HUMNT-0001-605).

Aimed at older adults who are choosing to return to the workforce or make a career change, the Plus 50 Series provides streamlined classes designed to guide participants through career searches, skills retraining and more. The following Plus 50 classes and workshops are being offered during the fall 2018 semester:

• "Career Search for Plus 50": Under the guidance of an expert career coach, participants will update their resume, practice interviewing and negotiating skills, and develop a professional LinkedIn profile, as well as learn about the resources available at COD and the community. The program will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 1 to 29. Cost is $35. (HUMNT-0001-150).

• "Computer Skills Camp for Plus 50": During this specially-priced, two-day computer camp, participants evaluate their computer skills under the guidance of experienced and patient instructors from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20. Cost is $50. (HUMNT-0001-152)

• "Job Search Websites for Plus 50": Discuss the pros and cons of a variety of job search websites, including local Chicago area sites as well as general search sites such as CareerBuilder, Indeed and LinkedIn, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 7 and 14. Cost is $25. (HUMNT-0001-157).

• "Networking for Plus 50": This two-session workshop will provide information and key ideas on networking, how to set up a network, and how to use and nurture your network from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 13 and 20. Cost is $25. (HUMNT-0001-151).

• "Self-Discovery for Plus 50": Designed for adults who are returning to school, entering the workforce or exploring volunteer opportunities, this course examines assessment tools to help participants uncover their interests and goals from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 27 to Dec. 11. • "Volunteerism in DuPage County": Presented by Giving DuPage, this workshop will cover the multitude of opportunities for volunteerism throughout the DuPage County community from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. Registration is required for this free workshop. (HUMNT-0001-156).

The Lifelong Learning Institute at College of DuPage offers a mix of courses, workshops, seminars and lectures in a wide range of topic areas, such as art and hobby, health and wellness, history, the humanities and more.

College of DuPage is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
