Hoffman Estates hosting history lecture to celebrate anniversary

The Hoffman Estates Museum will present a free lecture on the history of local surveying by Tanya and Donald Smith from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in the large meeting room at Hoffman Estates village hall, 1900 Hassell Road.

The Smiths also will speak about some of their interesting local projects. Donald represents the 5th generation of licensed land surveyors with the firm Greeley, Howard, Norlin & Smith, founded in Chicago by Samuel Greeley in 1854.

Greeley was awarded the Number 1 surveying license in the state after he served as an expert witness for attorney and surveyor Abraham Lincoln, helping him defend the ownership rights of the Chicago Central Railway Co.

Antique and modern surveying equipment will be on display.

The village will be celebrating its 59th anniversary and cake and coffee will be served. For more information, call (847) 755-9630.
