Hoffman Estates teen earns Blue Beret at Oshkosh air show

Cadet Lt. Col. Austin Lee of Hoffman Estates is a member of the Woodfield Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, which meets at the Schaumburg Regional Airport.

Lee, who is a student at Conant High School, recently earned his Blue Beret after participating at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The National Blue Beret is a National Cadet Special Activity in the Civil Air Patrol, one of about 50 National Cadet Special Activities sponsored by CAP across the nation each year. The event is two weeks long and is set up so that the second week overlaps with the annual EAA AirVenture Oshkosh event. Participants are Civil Air Patrol cadet and senior members who must go through a competitive selection process in order to attend the event.

Lee and the other CAP cadets spent two weeks at Oshkosh. The first week was devoted to preparation and obtaining the qualifications required to serve on an intensive, high-tempo mission base. The second week was spent using those skills to provide support for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh by marshaling aircraft on the flight line, tracking and finding overdue aircraft and interacting with the public.
