Naper Settlement exhibit explores the 'Great War'

Naperville's Naper Settlement, in collaboration with the Lewis University History Center and Give Something Back Foundation, is highlighting emerging wartime narratives and perspectives in a new exhibit, "Woodrow Wilson and the Great War."

The exhibit, which opened in late July at 523 S. Webster St., features photos and artifacts from the era, documenting World War I as it affected Woodrow Wilson's presidency. Artifacts include trench art, a gas mask and jacket, as well as some of Wilson's letters and belongings.

By exploring untold stories of the war, the exhibit raises questions about how we interpret history and discover new narratives.

"It is important for modern day visitors to understand the complexity of history. One hundred years after the end of World War I, the narrative of the conversation continues to change," said Kole Torres, co-curator of the exhibit and a Lewis University graduate student. "Viewing a topic through various lenses allows for a broader interpretation of history and previously overlooked narratives to be uncovered."

The exhibit will tour several locations in Illinois and elsewhere, beginning at Naper Settlement and culminating its run at the Woodrow Wilson House in Washington, D.C., and Princeton Historical Society in Princeton, New Jersey.

"Woodrow Wilson and the Great War" runs through Aug. 26 at the Settlement.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for kids ages 4 through 12. Admission is free for Naperville residents, members and children younger than 4.
