Drug take back event a success

Submitted by the Round Lake Park Police Department

On July 21, the Round Lake Park Police Department, with the cooperation of the Grayslake Fire Protection District and the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science College of Pharmacy, hosted a prescription drug take back event.

The improper disposal of unused medications by flushing them down the toilet, pouring them down the drain, keeping them in the home or throwing them in the garbage can present a danger to children and household pets and present a risk to fish, wildlife, and their habitats by entering the water supply.

Local residents were encouraged to drop off expired or unused prescription drugs at the Grayslake Fire Station 3.

Approximately 200 pounds of unwanted medications were collected. Additionally pharmacy students from Rosalind Franklin University distributed information about proper disposal of drugs and needles.

Round Lake Park Police Department offered residents on site registration with the Illinois Secretary of State Emergency Contact Database, which allows users to voluntarily enter one or two individuals to serve as their emergency contacts in the event they are involved in a traffic crash or have a medical emergency where they cannot communicate directly with law enforcement or emergency responders. The Emergency Contact Database also allows users to enter basic medical information, such as disabilities, medical conditions or special needs (i.e., drug allergies or prescription medication taken).

Lake County residents can also dispose of unused drugs throughout the year at dozens of locations through the Save a Star Drug Disposal Program. For location information, visit saveastar.org.
