Beacon Place to host walkathon July 23

Beacon Place has announced that it will host its fifth annual walkathon to raise funds to support all their programming from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 23, at 603 S. McAlister Ave. in Waukegan.

More than 400 walkers are expected to participate in what has become a community tradition.

The annual community walkathon offers a perfect opportunity for the entire Beacon Place family of children, parents, grandparents, volunteers, and community members to come together. Each step taken earns money from sponsors who have pledged to donate money.

Additionally, walkers in the event have included local Waukegan dignitaries and the office of the mayor. Last year, more than $10,000 was raised.

Beacon Place is a community center in southeast Waukegan with programs for children and adults that help them build the life skills the need to achieve a brighter future.

Beacon Place was established in 2012 by a group of dedicated individuals with more than 50 years of combined social service to the North Chicago and Waukegan communities. Together, this group has created programs and curriculum that has the potential to bring about transformational change for the area's most needy families.

Programs offered uphold the participants' dignity, give them the targeted help they want and need, and require a commitment from the participant to give back, creating a true partnership.

Since its inception, Beacon Place has touched the lives of more than 700 children and families. Its mission is "To inspire and guide the children and families in our neighborhood toward a brighter tomorrow."
