NIU offers Comedy Writing and Performance Camp

Northern Illinois University Continuing and Professional Education are offering a "Comedy Writing and Performance Camp" for youth entering ninth to 12th grade on July 15-20.

The camp director will be Dylan Doetch, an actor from Chicago who has studied and performed comedy at the Second City Training Center, iO Chicago and the Annoyance Theater.

The camp will appeal to comedy fans, as well as students interested in drama, debate, writing and character development.

It will also help the next generation of aspiring lawyers, politicians and business leaders develop their confidence and public speaking abilities.

Doetch has a passion for teaching comedy, which he does for both corporate clients and at Belvedere High School.

Although this camp is designed first and foremost to be fun, students will also learn important lessons that are valuable to academic and career success.

Doetch says, "My improv classes (in Chicago) have been populated with corporate men and women whose companies are paying for them to go through these programs because of what this training can do for their disposition. Improv and comedy just make people more interesting, engaged and brave."

Campers can expect to participate in specialized workshops in improv, sketch comedy and stand up, among other comedic genres.

Cost is $725. Campers will stay in an on-campus residence hall at Stevenson Hall.
