Fox Valley Jewish School now accepting students for 2018-19

Students from Fox Valley Jewish School in Geneva helped uproot invasive garlic mustard from Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn this spring, the capstone of their annual community service project.

The school, which is now accepting registrations for the upcoming school year, is excited to announce some changes to its school format.

The school meets twice a month on Sunday mornings from September to May. It is divided into an upper and lower school.

Classes will now include a Hebrew word of the day and ethics lesson, then dividing by age groups for the lesson of the day, followed by the ages joining together again for art, food, music or book club for the final half-hour.

"Fox Valley Jewish School is a wonderful way for local families to provide a stronger sense of Jewish community for their children," said Rachel Yackley, executive director of Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors. "We would love for new families, including interfaith families, to join our welcoming school community for the great school year ahead."

One part of the school's mission is to contribute to the community in a meaningful, kid-friendly way.

This year, the students worked with the Kane County Forest Preserve to help maintain area forest preserves.

In the fall, students, ranging in age from 5-13, helped gather seeds from native plants at Dick Young Forest Preserve that would be used to reseed forest preserve land. In May, they met to identify and rid a section of Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve of garlic mustard, an invasive, nonnative plant that can dominate other plants in the woods.
