Rotary Club donates trees to Hawthorn Woods

The Rotary Club of Long Grove, Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods recently donated and helped to plant 150 tree saplings in Hawthorn Woods. This project was part of a larger Rotary District 6440 goal to plant trees throughout the Chicago area.

The club purchased 50 white oak, 50 red oak and 50 dogwood tree saplings from The Arbor Day Foundation. The trees were planted at the 11.5 acre Brierwoods Preserve near the Acorn Acres subdivision east of Route 12.

Last fall, Hawthorn Woods established a monarch butterfly garden at the preserve. The park has several benches and overlook areas where residents may sit and enjoy all the beauty the preserve has to offer.

Rotary Clubs have a long tradition of supporting environmental projects across the world and in local communities. The project was initiated and organized by Rotary Club member and President Jim Dopler.

Other club members who volunteered to plant the trees included: Lyle and Ann-Marie Staab of Hawthorn Woods, George Dorner of Kildeer, Robert Mintz of Long Grove and Adam Keppel of Crystal Lake.

The club worked closely with Brian Sullivan, director of Parks and Recreation, Hawthorn Woods and the Hawthorn Woods Public Works department.
