McHenry County College to offer salsa, swing dance classes

Have fun learning high-energy dance moves with two new dance classes this summer offered by the McHenry County College Continuing Education Department. Salsa dance class and East Coast Swing are available for either singles or couples beginning in June.

The instructor for both classes is English Swanson, who has been teaching and dancing in the Chicago area professionally for the past seven years. Her training includes the Judith Svalander School of Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Austin, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Her ballroom training began in Chicago under the direction of Nino DiGiulio with the widely renowned dance studio, May I Have This Dance. Most recently, English has worked on the popular TV series "Empire" where she danced classical ballet in one of the episodes. She regularly teaches ballroom and ballet classes at the Woodstock Dance Academy.

These new dance classes are accepting registration.

Salsa Dance Class:

Learn the steps of the Latin dance of Salsa. This is an upbeat, high-energy class designed for the beginning dancer. Swanson will teach the footwork and partnering techniques for new, sizzling salsa moves each week. Students will rotate partners throughout the class, which enables each student the opportunity to practice their leading and/or following skills. Class takes place from 7:30 to 8:20 p.m. Mondays, June 11 through July 30, in Room B257 at MCC. Cost is $179 per couple, course code NSD S23 002, or $95 for singles, course code NSD S23 001.

Swing Dance Class:

Swing is one of the easiest styles of dance to learn and perfect for the beginning dancer. Swanson will teach the style and steps of the East Coast swing, which is also known as Jitterbug or Jive. This high-energy class features upbeat music and at least one new dance move each week. Partners will rotate throughout the class, which will enable dancers to practice leading and/or following skills. Sign up early, as space is limited. Class takes place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays, June 15 through Aug. 10 (no class July 6) at Clarendale, 2001 W. Algonquin Road in Algonquin. Cost is $179 per couple, course code NSD S24 002, or $95 for singles, course code NSD S24 001.
