Center celebrates National Senior Health & Fitness Day

The Arlington Heights Senior Center, 1801 W. Central Road, Arlington Heights, will join an estimated 1,000 local groups to celebrate the 25th anniversary of National Senior Health & Fitness Day Wednesday, May 30. As an official event site, the Arlington Heights Senior Center will hold a series of presentations on brain health, as well as a variety of screenings all morning long.

The Arlington Heights Senior Center will join an estimated 100,000 older adults across the country participating in local activities to help promote active, healthy lifestyles through physical activity, good nutrition, and preventive care.

"Our multiagency health and fitness event is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to make, renew and revitalize their commitment to live healthier lives through better health and fitness," said Karie Van Grinsven, program coordinator.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with free tote bags and giveaways for the first 300 guests. Snacks and juice will be served. Featured presentations include "Brain Health" at 9 a.m. with Jeannine Forrest, Ph.D., R.N., followed by "Nutrition and Cognition - Are They Related?" with Peggy Balboa, RD, LDN at 10 a.m. and keynote speaker Mary Helen Ekstam, MT-BC, talking on "Music and the Brain" at 11 a.m. Free prizes, each valued at $100, will be given out following each of the presentations. (Must be present to win.)

The following free screenings will be offered between 8:30 and 11 a.m.: Blood pressure, bone density, body mass index, hearing, posture, fall risk, skin cancer and a stroke risk assessment. Northwest Community Hospital's therapy dogs will even be on hand.

Seniors, as well as those who care for them, are welcome to attend. No registration is needed. The center is located at 1801 W. Central Road in Arlington Heights.
