Local Businesses Join Mayor's Challenge for SALUTE, Inc. 5K

SALUTE, INC., the Palatine, Illinois based non-profit dedicated to meeting the financial, physical and emotional needs of injured military service members, veterans and their families, is hosting a Memorial Day Weekend 5K/10K that caught the attention of community leaders.

Last month, Arlington Heights Mayor, retired U.S. Army veteran and avid runner, Tom Hayes, announced that he'll donate $5 to SALUTE, INC. for every person who beats his time in the 5K. After reading about the challenge, Picket Fence Realty owners, Sue and Paul Duchek, decided to join in, committing to match the mayor's donation up to $500.

"It seemed like an obvious cause to support," said Mrs. Duchek. "Both my and Paul's fathers served in the military and we love the work SALUTE is doing to help those who served our country. We'd like to do our part to contribute."

In addition to joining the mayor's challenge, the Ducheks have also reached out to encourage other local business owners to join the challenge and match the mayor's donation. So far, 24 local businesses have signed on from a variety of industries.

"We're so grateful the community has become invested in our cause," said SALUTE, INC. co-founder and Executive Director Mary Beth Beiersdorf. "We were thrilled when the mayor issued his original challenge and we are in awe of the support coming from Picket Fence Realty and other local businesses."

The Memorial Weekend race will start at 8:00 a.m. at Recreation Park on Sunday, May 27th. Online registration is open through Thursday, May 24th. In person registration is available at Runner's High n' Tri May 25th and 26th. Same day registration opens at 6:30 a.m. on race morning. To register for the race, visit http://bit.ly/2EJeReJ.
