Learn how to research your house history online May 24

As part of Elgin's Historic Preservation Month activities, historical researcher Rebecca Hunter will offer "Research Your House in Kane County Using the internet" on Thursday, May 24.

It will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the computer training room at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin. Registration is requested at (847) 429-4680 or visit www.gailborden.info.

A house is historical in relation to its location, date of construction, architectural style, architect, and ownership.

House research is a fascinating combination of legal, architectural, genealogical and cartographical studies.

Seeking information about the history of a house is becoming faster and easier as governmental agencies make records available on the internet.

In this hands-on seminar, you can begin to look up information online about your house.

Hunter has been engaged in historical architectural research since 1997.

Local author and historian Rebecca Hunter has extensively researched structures and compiled studies on the architecture of Elgin. These studies cover Sears and other kit homes, the use of ornamental concrete blocks in Elgin architecture, and the current uses for neighborhood grocery stores and rural outbuildings.
