Fremont students get a Taste of College

About 25 eighth graders from Fremont Middle School recently got a glimpse into what it means to attend college.

As part of the Taste of College event, students visited the College of Lake County in Grayslake to see firsthand where the demands for jobs are. They also saw how lasers and photonics work, and heard about the real-world applications of degrees in the majors that deal with such devices, ranging from jobs in medicine to manufacturing. Students also visited CLC's University Center and they learned about the structure of many different colleges, from Illinois State University to Northeastern Illinois University.

Students also toured Trinity International University in Deerfield where they peeked into college dorms, dining halls and classrooms.

The focus of the program is encouraging students to think about attending college in the future, particularly students who might be the first in their family to do so.

"This program demystifies college for students and helps them see the value of it in their future," said teacher Tim Fennell, who leads this program for FSD79.
