Nominees announced for 2018 YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon Awards

The YWCA Elgin recently announced the nominees for its 35th annual Leader Luncheon Awards at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at The Seville in Streamwood.

The Leader Luncheon is attended by hundreds of community leaders, business and community representatives and volunteers.

"The YWCA Leader Luncheon has become a time-honored community event and tradition to acknowledge women from Elgin and the surrounding communities," said Libby Hoeft, this year's Leader Luncheon chair.

All nominations are reviewed and judged by community members. One woman from each category will be selected and announced at the Leader Luncheon. The following women community leaders have been nominated by their colleagues and peers:

• Margaret Hillis Award for the Arts: Amanda Harris and Darlene Hulin;

• Beatrice Dorsey Award for Business & Professions: V. Guadalupe Fonseca, Amanda Garcia, and Kim Hannell-Hopkins;

• Marguerite Henry Award for Communications & Technology: Amanda Garcia, Hasi Smith, and Janelle Walker;

• Harriet Gifford & Hattie Griffin Award for Education: Soma Chattopadhyay and Christen A. Sundquist;

• Myrtle Spiegler Gerberding Award for Public Service: Jean Bednar, Barbara Jeffers, Anna Moeller, Eira L. Corral Sepulveda, and Susan Van Weelden;

• Betty Brown Award for Racial Justice: Elida Cano and Rabbi Margaret Frisch Klein;

• Marie Grolich Award for Social Services: Maria Aurora Diaz; Joan Kanute, Judith Miller, and Kimberly Schellin-Rog, LCPC;

• Marjorie Leonard Award for Volunteer & Community Service: Leanne Blegen-McCoy, Shirley May Byrnes, Judy Dunne, Jennifer Fukala, Gwen Gage, Joann W. Hartmann, Chathia F. Johnson, and Mary Carol MacDonald.

"In addition to announcing our Leader Luncheon recipients," Hoeft adds, "we will also honor with a special recognition the late Jack Shales and the late Elayne Pappas."

Shales of Shales McNutt Construction was a longtime supporter of the YWCA Elgin and Leader Luncheon and Pappas founded the Leader Luncheon in 1984.

"This year's speakers will be selected members of the local chorus group, Nothing But Treble," said Hoeft. "The group is comprised of Elgin area women whose ages bridge five decades and voices span over three octaves. Their music is most fitting for our event as it is written by women with meaningful themes for and about women."
