Area nurse practitioner to receive award of excellence

Nurse Practitioner Pamela Haerr of Prospect Heights will be among the nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner advocates who will receive the American Association of Nurse Practitioners 2018 State Award for Excellence during an award ceremony and reception held at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners 2018 National Conference in June.

The award recognizes a nurse practitioner in a state who demonstrates excellence in practice. As coordinator of a busy Pediatric HIV Clinic, Haerr has taught hospital nurses and resident physicians about perinatal HIV prevention in emergency rooms, labor and delivery, nurseries and pediatric in patient units.

She has championed the development of guidelines consistent with CDC recommendations, thereby creating a culture of excellence in and outside of her workplace.

Haerr was also part of groundbreaking research that demonstrated that perinatal HIV was preventable by giving antiviral medication to newborns.

• Breast Surgical Oncologist Dr. Katherine Hansen has joined the Northwest Community Healthcare Medical Group at the 880 W. Central Road, Suite 5000, practice.

Dr. Hansen received her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri. She finished an internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and two residencies at the Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, New Jersey. She completed a breast oncology fellowship at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Dr. Hansen is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Society of Breast Surgeons, to name a few.

In 2015, she received the George Peters Award for Best Presentation by a Breast Fellow. She is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.

• Oakton Community College announced six winners of the board of trustees Outstanding Student Award at its annual Student Leadership Banquet held Thursday, April 26, in Niles.

The honorees include: Amanda Aragon (Niles, Niles North High School), Gabriel Chacon (Des Plaines, Maine East High School), Brian Chan (Des Plaines, Maine East High School), Brenda Cruz (Des Plaines, Maine West High School), Dante Espejo Ramirez (Des Plaines, Maine West High School) and Ashley Wolfe (Morton Grove, Mundelein High School).

Each year, the Oakton board of trustees recognizes five student recipients who have completed the college's Emerging Leaders program with a $300 scholarship for outstanding leadership. Chacon and Cruz split the fifth scholarship and will receive $150 each.

• Arlington Heights resident Gustavo Hernandez was recently named regional champion of LongHorn Steakhouse's Steak Master Series, a culinary competition where the restaurant's top-performing grill experts vie for the coveted title of Steak Master.

He is one of just 57 team members from LongHorn Steakhouse to achieve this distinction. Gustavo is a Grill Master at the LongHorn at 1901 E. Golf Road in Schaumburg.
