Winners of the Youth Concerto Competition will perform April 29

The Fox Valley Orchestra will present a chorus concert, "Timeless Romance," at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Aurora University's Crimi Auditorium, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora.

Conductor Brian Groner says, "This concert presents several mainstays of the orchestral literature. The Bach/Holst Fugue a la Gigue is a charming concert opener which demands great precision from the performers. It is only three minutes in length and every time I hear it I wish it were far longer, as it is a true delight. This Bach piece arranged for orchestra by Holst is part of the program as a sort of orchestral aperitif."

"Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' is one of those pieces which must be heard by every generation of young listener. It shares a brilliant children's story with narrator and small orchestra. So many of us remember the first time we heard this piece. Even though it is telling a children's fable, it places great demands on the musicians."

Maestro Groner also notes "Borodin's Polovtsian Dances were chosen in collaboration with our wonderful chorus director Dr. Lisa Fredenburgh. She will be leading the combined forces to present this timeless classic."

Lovers of Broadway musicals will no doubt recognize that the music from this piece was used in the play "Kismet." "The Gliding Dance of the Maidens" was reworked into the pop piece "Strangers in Paradise."

Additionally, the Fox Valley Orchestra will present as soloists the winners of the Youth Concerto Competition. The first-place winner, pianist Kimberly Han, will perform Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3, Movement 1, and second-place winner, violinist John Heo, will play the Introduction and Rondo Capriccisoso by Saint-Saens.

The Youth Vocal Competition winner, tenor Craig Moman will perform Donizetti's "Fra Poco a me Ricovero."

Concert tickets are available online at www.foxvalleyorchestra.org at $14, $12 for students and seniors, and $9 for children age 8 or younger.

Tickets purchased at the door are slightly higher, if available. For more information, call (630) 891-2526.
