Film tells story of 'The Fox,' an early environmental activist

On Tuesday, May 1, the Elgin chapter of Izaak Walton League of America will host a showing of the 40-minute documentary film "The Legend of the Fox: World Famous Eco-Hero."

The film documents the covert, one-man effort of James F. Phillips, "The Fox", to stop pollution from entering the Fox River. When "The Fox" plugged his first pipe that was polluting the Fox River, the sign he left read: "What God hath wrought we must preserve and protect, not desecrate in the name of profit."

Friends of the Fox River Executive Director Gary Mechanic will lead a follow-up discussion on Phillips, who served on the board of the environmental group. Hear about the past and present challenges to the Fox River.

On Saturday, May 19, join a Willow Creek clean-up at at 8:30 a.m. Meet at the lodge and wear old clothing. Lunch will be serve around noon time.

From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, the Ikes will host the annual "Fish for Fun Day" at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive in Elgin. Prizes for each fish catagory will be awarded to youth 16 and under.

Did you know the Elgin chapter has an outdoor archery range on the property? Weather permitting, the range will be open from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 1 to 3 p.m. Sundays at the lodge. There is a $5 range fee for each visit. For an additional $5, there are bows to rent for adults and kids. They also have archery instructors on site while range is open.
