College of DuPage hosts 'Excellence in History' April 16

College of DuPage presents "Oorahs and Hinomarus: Reliving the World War II Experience Through Documents and Family Artifacts" on Monday, April 16, as part of the 24th annual Carter D. Carroll Excellence in History Awards ceremony.

The presentation will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Health and Science Center, Room 1234, on the College's Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

This event is free and open to the public.

Based on academic research and personal family history, COD and Joliet Junior College history Professor James Heniff will focus on his grandfather's experiences as a Marine in the Pacific Theater of World War II and on the use and significance of the Yosegaki Hinomaru, a "well wishes" or "good luck" flag used by Japanese combat forces.

Prior to the presentation, the College will recognize this year's winners of the Carter D. Carroll Excellence in History award. Since its inception in 1994, the award has honored students for excellence in writing achievement in the field of history. Professor Carter D. Carroll was a founding faculty member at COD who taught history at the College for more than two decades. He passed away in December 2017.
