Save-A-Pet in Grayslake offering microchip service

This year, April 15-21 is National Pet ID Week and Save-A-Pet in Grayslake is offering microchipping for dogs and cats. The microchip service is available by appointment during regular Save-A-Pet adoption center hours for $35.

The third Sunday of each month is Save-A-Pet Microchip Day and the fee is reduced to $25. The program begins Sunday, April 15.

Microchips are implantable computer chips that contain an identification number to help reunite you with your lost pet. They are no bigger than a grain of rice and they are placed under your pet's skin with a needle and syringe, not much differently than a routine vaccine. Unlike collars and ID tags, they can never break or fall off. They work by receiving a radio signal from a scanner and transmitting the encoded chip identification number back to the scanner. With the chip identification number in hand, the vital contact information is only a phone call away. The chips are registered for life of the pet at no charge through petlink.net. It is simple to register and add your contact information via the petlink web page or via your mobile phone.

The procedure is fast and safe and will be invaluable to you and your family if your pet should become lost.

Save-A-Pet is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and has saved more than 63,000 animals, and expanded thousands of families with the love of an adopted pet. Relying solely on donor generosity, Save-A-Pet, is one of the largest no-kill cat and dog rescues in Lake County, and costs more than $1,500,000 per year to operate.

For more information about the microchip program or to make an appointment call Save-A-Pet's Animal Health Department at (847) 740-7788, ext. 118.
