ECC to host Latino Film Festival April 13-15

Elgin Community College will host the 2018 Latino Film Festival Elgin from Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 15.

This is the sixth year the college will host the festival, which features films from Mexico, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and the United States. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles.

The festival kicks off on Friday, April 13, with the screening of the 2017 Mexican romantic comedy "American Curious" at 6:30 p.m. in the Building G Spartan Auditorium, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. The film stars Jordan Belfi, seen in "Entourage" and "Gray's Anatomy," Ana Claudia Talancon and Isela Vega. David Green, a Chicago stand-up comedian, learns that the biological mother he never knew left him her restaurant in Mexico City. He meets the chef and embarks on a journey in search of his roots and the recipe for a special soup created by his mother.

An opening reception will be held after the film. Tickets to the film and reception is $30, $20 for seniors. Tickets to see the film only are $15, $12 for seniors.

The remaining films will be shown at Marcus Theatres, 111 S. Randall Road, Elgin, and tickets to each film are $15, $12 for seniors. Tickets to all events can be purchased at the door, by phone at (800) 344-0538 or online at www.latinofilmfestivalelgin.com.

On Saturday, April 14, the 2016 Chilean film "Looking for a Boyfriend … For My Wife/Se Busca Novio Para Mi Mujer" at 5 p.m. In the comedy, Paco, in an unhappy marriage, hires a professional seducer nicknamed "El Taiger" to seduce his wife.

At 7 p.m., the 2017 Peruvian drama "The Final Hour/La Hora Final" by Eduardo Mendoza de Echave is the story of two detectives tracking the leader of a terrorist organization in 1992. It brings to life the true story of how years of undercover police work led to the arrest of Abimail Guzmán, leader of the Shining Path guerrilla movement.

On Sunday, April 15, the 2017 Uruguayan sports movie, "Home Team/Mi Mundial," will be shown at 3 p.m. The movie based on Daniel Baldi's book tells the story of Tito, a talented 13-year-old soccer player whose talents lift his family out of poverty but, after an accident, his dreams are dashed.

At 5 p.m., see the 2018 slapstick comedy "Run Fast or Fly High/El Que No Corre … Vuela," filmed in Chicago and written and directed by Ricardo Islas. During the "Panama Papers" scandal, a hacker has robbed millions of dollars from the Mafia. Chased by mobsters and a clueless detective, our anti-hero travels to Chicago, where the money is stolen from him, and he needs to find it before the bad guys find him! This cartoonish comedy is from the team behind last year's comedy "All or Nothing."

On Sunday, April 15, the Chicago Mustangs, the 2014 Professional Arena Soccer League Champion, will make an appearance at 3 p.m., prior to the showing of "Home Team/Mi Mundial."

Also, the cast of "Run Fast or Fly High/El Que No corre … Vuela" will appear at 5 p.m.
