Lisle Heritage Society presents 'Gentleman Farmers of DuPage County'

The Lisle Heritage Society will present "Gentleman Farmers of DuPage County and Their Country Estates" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Netzley/Yender House, 921 School St. in Lisle.

The rapid rise in urban density in cities like Chicago at the end of the nineteenth century produced nostalgia for the countryside by men of wealth from business, industry, and finance. Gentleman farmers built beautiful homes designed by well known architects of the time and made their large farms into showplaces.

This presentation recalls the heyday of the gentleman farmer in DuPage County and focuses on examples of country estates in Lisle, Wheaton, and Hinsdale. The speaker will be Linda Neff, a docent and volunteer researcher at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook.
