Author Jacqueline Davies visits Tarkington

Author Jacqueline Davies visited Tarkington Elementary School on February 28 as a culminating celebration for the school's "One School, One Book" literacy initiative. Davies is well know for her "Lemonade War" series and each family at Tarkington received a copy of the book. The visit was made possible thanks to a grant from the Rotary Club of Wheeling.

Leading up to and following the visit, families engaged in events at Indian Trails Public Library and at Tarkington. Family reading night was held on March 1 to coincide with "Read Across America," a national reading celebration. Families drank lemonade and tested each other's knowledge with "Lemonade War" trivia.

"The coordination of these events sends a strong message to families that literacy is not just something taught at school," said Ryann Rivers, Tarkington Information Literacy and Enrichment Teacher. "In this way, literacy throughout the day does not stop at 3:30, but continues at home with our families."

Districtwide, an Area of Focus for all schools in CCSD21 is Literacy Throughout the Day where students will engage in rich language and literacy experiences in all learning settings.
