The Bartlett Library celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday

The Bartlett Library was the place to be on Thursday, March 1 when Youth & Teen Services Librarians Mary Beth Fuller and Phyllis Sadowski read stories and more to celebrate the beloved Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2).

Fuller and Sadowski's first story of the night was "Interrupting Chicken" by David Ezra Stein, which is a funny book filled with a chicken and his father. His father tries to tell him some fairy tales before bed, but the chicken keeps interrupting the story. Children laughed when Sadowski, playing the role as the interrupting chicken, would fill in the rest of the stories Fuller, playing the role of the father, was telling.

Those at the program enjoyed dancing along to the "Chicken Dance" song, and laughter filled the room as the song played faster and faster and faster.

The next story got even more laughs. Fuller and Sadowski performed the story "Falling for Rapunzel" by Leah Wilcox. With this story, the prince comes to the bottom of Rapunzel's tower, but she constantly mishears him when he asks her to throw down her hair. Children laughed when Fuller, playing the role of Rapunzel, threw down a picture of "socks" instead of her "locks" or her "maid" rather than "braid."

Fuller and Sadowski then went into their own version of the famous tale of "The Princess and the Pea," which was originally written by Hans Christian Andersen. Fuller put on a pink tiara to be the princess, and Sadowski held up a squishy, green ball as the pea. The two went back and forth, rhyming a story out for the audience to laugh and enjoy.

They wrapped the program up with a Dr. Seuss book called "Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!" This story is about how Marvin K. Mooney is told to go away by all different kinds of transportation, but he just cannot seem to take a hint.

When all the stories were finished, families were welcome to partake in a few crafts. They could color in a couple of chickens, glue feathers on them and even attach fun eye stickers as the finishing touch. They then cut the chickens out to put them on Popsicle sticks, so they could use the interrupting chickens whenever they want. There was also a colorful door hanger that read "Interrupt Me" on one side, and then "Shhh! I'm Reading" on the other.

There was also a variety of sticker scenes they could grab and play with.

If you missed this program, an upcoming Youth & Teen Services program at the Bartlett Library is the "Drop-In Crafts" program on Friday, March 9 from 3 to 4 p.m. All ages. Join us to make a spring craft! Children under age 8 must be accompanied by a caregiver age 16 or older.
