Carmel Catholic robotics team wins state tournament

Carmel Catholic High School's varsity robotics team, Not Your Average Nerds, won the state competition Feb. 24 and secured its spot at the national competition.

Going into the semifinals, NYAN was the only undefeated team and was ranked number 1. They won the semifinals, finals and the championship and, in the process, NYAN reached the highest score in Illinois this season: 589 points.

Eight of their matches from this tournament scored in the current top 10. According to the announcer, the 45 teams at the state competition were narrowed from 178 teams from high schools all over Illinois, and there are more than 5,000 teams worldwide.

At the national competition, held March 15-17 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, teams will compete to advance to the world championship.
