Trinity regents approve 2018-19 budget

The Trinity International University Board of Regents unanimously approved a new budget and heard positive reports about student life and enrollment indicators during its spring semester meeting Feb. 22-23.

The board approved an unrestricted expense budget of $36 million for the 2018-19 fiscal year. Trinity's new fiscal year begins May 1.

In his report to the board, President David S. Dockery shared encouraging numbers related to unrestricted and total giving to the University, student retention and student recruitment.

In terms of giving, gift totals this year match up closely with last year's amounts, which were among the best in recent school history. Dockery said student retention from fall to spring increased this year to 91 percent, but he would like to see that proportion rise to about 95 percent in the next few years.

Dockery reported increases for undergraduate applications, acceptances, and confirmed students over this time last year.

"We offer thanks to God and trust him to bring the right students to Trinity in the coming year," Dockery said.

Regents also heard reports in their committees about several current Trinity programs.

One report focused on the Mosaic Initiative, an effort to help local churches minister more effectively to young adults. Regents received an update about Timber-lee, Trinity's youth camp in southern Wisconsin. Paige Cunningham, executive director of The Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity, brought a report about that organization's recent initiatives and plans to celebrate its 25thanniversary. Regents also learned about Trinity Sunday, an invitation for congregations within the Evangelical Free Church of America to devote a portion of a worship service in February or March to prayer and support for Trinity.

The board also voted to grant tenure to two professors at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, both of whom are TEDS graduates.

Donald Guthrie, professor of Educational Ministries, has served at Trinity since 2012. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from TEDS in 1985. Te-Li Lau, associate professor of New Testament, has served on the faculty since 2008. He earned Master of Divinity and Master of Theology degrees from TEDS.
