U of C professors discuss book on aging Sunday in Barrington

BARRINGTON, Ill. February 23, 2018 ---Famed playwright George Bernard Shaw once remarked, "We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing."

So what are the best strategies for fending off the advances of Old Man (or Woman) Time?

Two prominent University of Chicago professors will discuss "Aging Thoughtfully: Conversations About Retirement, Romance, Wrinkles & Regret" at 3 p.m., Sunday (Feb. 25) at Barrington's White House, 145 W. Main Street. VIP tickets are $30, adults $20 and students $10.

Come join a lively conversation between Martha Nussbaum, the renowned philosopher and ethicist at the U of C, and Saul Levmore, the former dean and a current professor at the university's law school, as they discuss topics such as retirement, cosmetic procedures, philanthropy, and refashioning Social Security. The two friends will sign their new book, Aging Thoughtfully, after the discussion.

As noted in a New York Times book review by Dwight Garner, the book is "framed as a conversation and, although these two are friends, it grows heated. You begin to sense that while one is talking, the other is chalking his or her pool cure."

A prolific and celebrated philosopher, Nussbaum is the author of more than 20 books, editor of another 21 books and author of numerous essays and articles. Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, with appointments in the law school and philosophy departments. She has received honorary degrees from 56 colleges and universities in the U.S. and abroad.

Levmore came to the Law School from the University of Virginia in 1998. He was the Dean of the University of Chicago Law School from 2001 to 2009, and since then has been the William B. Graham Distinguished Service Professor of Law. He has been a visiting professor at Yale, Harvard, Michigan, and Northwestern.

VIP tickets entitle holders to a reception following the event. See www.BarringtonsWhiteHouse.com for information and tickets.
