CLC Music department announces seven spring 2018 concerts

College of Lake County musicians will present seven concerts this spring that feature music that appeals to a variety of tastes. From swinging jazz and soothing classical instrumental works to delightful modern choral pieces and inspirational gospel songs, each concert is programmed to include crowd pleasers that also challenge the ensembles' students and community members.

"CLC's ten ensembles are loaded with talent, and I encourage all local music lovers to take advantage of the opportunity to hear excellent live music, performed in a beautiful theatre for a very low price," said Dr. Michael Flack, Music department chair.

41st Annual Guest Artist Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday March 9 featuring legendary Chicago saxophonist Mark Colby and the Monday and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles. Colby has toured with the Maynard Ferguson and Bob James bands, Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. He teaches saxophone at DePaul University and Elmhurst College and performs as a guest soloist and clinician/adjudicator at middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the U.S. and Europe.

With Colby, the Monday Night band, under the direction of Dr. Michael Flack, will play a program that includes "A Portrait of Jennie," "Sail Away," "Goodbye Mr. Evans," "Marionette" and "Caroline's Romp." The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dave Hibbard, will also perform. The concert's media sponsor is WDCB 90.9 FM, Chicago's Home for Jazz and Blues. The Guest Artist Series has brought nationally known and award-winning performers and conductors to perform with college musicians and offer clinics and workshops. Wind Ensemble, Sunday, March 11 and Sunday, May 6, both at 4 p.m. The 50-member Wind Ensemble is an auditioned group composed of students and community members conducted by Dr. Michael Flack. The March 11 concert includes several Leonard Bernstein pieces to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. The concert will feature "Slava!" by Bernstein, "Second Suite in F, Op. 28b" by Gustav Holst, "Concerto for Trumpet" by Alexander Arutiunian featuring Tom Forkenbrock on trumpet, "A Bernstein Tribute," "Abraham Lincoln Funeral March," "Italian Rhapsody" by Julie Giroux and "War March of the Tartars" by Karl L. King.

Gospel Choir Concert, Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m. Gospel Choir Concert, Saturday, April 14 at 6 p.m. Clap along to a spirited selection of gospel songs and spirituals by the Gospel Choir and special guest musicians, under the direction of Matthew Hunter.

Jazz Night, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy a variety of lively big band jazz charts performed by the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble and the Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble.

Spring Choral Concert, Saturday, May 5 at 6 p.m. CLC choirs will perform songs from the stage (musical theatre and opera), plus a Leonard Bernstein at 100 tribute to the legendary American composer, including selections from "Candide" and "West Side Story." The CLC Singers, Choir of Lake County and Chamber Singers are directed by Ingrid Mikolajczyk. The Gospel Choir will also perform under the direction of Matthew Hunter.

Jazz Combos: Monday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. Two combos, directed by John Mose and David Jennings, will present a free concert in Room P101. For the second year in a row, a jazz combo will perform in China at CLC's American Culture Center at Xi'an University and at other Chinese universities and cultural centers. Political science instructor and grant manager Tim Murphy will lead the trip, and Jennings will serve as music director. The CLC student musicians traveling to China are: Phil MacNaughton (drums), Dylan Barnes (bass), Elias Olson (piano), Cody Carrigan (guitar) and Samantha Gallagher (vocals).

Concert Band Concert, Wednesday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. The Concert Band, directed by John Mose, will perform a wide range of band music, from classic marches and symphonic pieces to Broadway medleys and film scores.

Concerts are held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. Ticket prices range from $6 to $10, with a $1 discount for CLC students/staff and seniors. Instrumental music concerts are free to students under age 18. Due to the quiet nature of many songs, choral concerts are not appropriate for children under age 3.
