Naperville Park District ice skating areas to close by Feb. 15

Naperville Park District staff anticipates the closing of its outdoor skating areas, most likely by Thursday, Feb.15. Warmer temperatures are predicted, which will cause melting conditions, making the ice unsuitable for skating.

The Park District's annual ice skating season typically runs from December 15 to February 15 depending on weather conditions. If unusually cold temperatures persist beyond February 15 it is possible to keep the skating areas open longer. However, under normal conditions in mid-February, the average seasonal temperatures cannot overcome the sun's rays, which have reached an angle that melts the ice too quickly for it to be maintained adequately for skating.

As of Monday, Feb. 12, the ice skating areas at Centennial Park and Nike Sports Complex are the only skating areas open at the Park District. Residents may check their status on the Weather Cancellations page of the Park District website.

The Park District's sled hills will remain open as long as the ground is frozen with two or more inches of snow and no visible grass. For sledding and snowboarding locations, check www.napervilleparks.org/wintersportsfacilities.
