Arlington Heights Community Band concert features movie scores

The 2017 documentary "Score" explores a film composer's creative process and connection to music in motion pictures. Music creates the magic in film; it expresses varied vibes and emotions and immerses viewers into each moment.

Who can forget the theme to "Jaws"? Two simple notes brilliantly composed by John Williams will forever be associated with fear. Or, how about "Indiana Jones," as he swings from his rope to the accompaniment of another John Williams score. Remember Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere" from "West Side Story," or the haunting music from "Titanic?"

The upcoming Academy Awards will usher in a new crop of Best Actresses and Best Pictures, but it is the music in the movies and the Best Original Score that will create lasting memories.

For those looking to relive some of their favorite orchestral overtures, The Arlington Heights Community Concert Band will celebrate the music of film with a new program just in time for the Academy Awards.

"Night at the Movies" will feature Oscar-winning themes from films including "West Side Story," "Titanic," "Jurassic Park" and "The Natural" from world-renowned composers like James Horner, John Williams, Alan Silvestre, Stephen Sondheim and more. Movie clips projected above the band will be an extra treat for film fans.

"Night at the Movies," created and conducted by Mike Madonia, takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Admission is free; reserving tickets is recommended to guarantee seating.

To reserve tickets, call (847) 718-7702 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday or email ahccbtickets@gmail.com. Remaining tickets will be available at the door.

The band continues to welcome interested musicians. Membership is open to anyone ages 14 and older who has experience playing a musical instrument. No audition is required and seat placement is at the conductor's discretion.

The band members have varied skill levels, from professional musicians to former high school and college musicians. Weekly rehearsals are from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Forrest View or local high schools. Interested musicians are welcome to join a rehearsal and try the band out.

The mission of the Arlington Heights Community Concert Band is to provide musical entertainment to the community, to provide opportunities for community members to join and be part of a musical organization, to provide for individual musical expression and growth, and to contribute to the community's music appreciation.
