Explore the classic children's book 'The Snowy Day' Feb. 10

The Hoffman Estates Chapter of Links Inc. invites the community to "The Snowy Day: Exploring the Art of Ezra Jack Keats" from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in the Meadows Community Room at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin.

Families are invited to explore the artwork featured in the 1963 Caldecott Medal winner "The Snowy Day."

After listening to the story, families can create their own artistic impressions of a snow-filled day.

Each family will receive one free copy of the book for their home library, while supplies last.

Register at gailborden.info. All children under 8 years of age must be supervised by a responsible caregiver age 14 or older.

Keats' 1962 classic broke the color barrier in mainstream children's literature when its young, African-American protagonist, Peter, in his iconic red snowsuit, was instantly embraced by the public. "The Snowy Day" was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1963 and designated a "book that shaped America" by the Library of Congress in 2012.

In 2017, Amazon Original's animated holiday special "The Snowy Day" was nominated for five Daytime Emmy Awards, and won two, including Outstanding Preschool Children's Animated Program.

The Hoffman Estates Chapter is committed to ensuring that youth are academically successful and engaged in healthy lifestyles. This is done through programs produced under five facets which include "Services to Youth," "The Arts," "National Trends and Services," "International Trends and Services" and "Health and Human Services."

For 2018, the chapter has developed an "Arts Facet Classics Through the Ages" program that combines visual arts and reading to inspire literacy in elementary school age children in Elgin.
