Schaumburg High Fishing Club takes to the ice

Members of Schaumburg High School's fishing club had the opportunity to experience ice fishing for the first time Jan. 18. Fourteen members of the club, which was formed earlier this year, caught a total of 10 bass on the ice at Sunrise Outdoor Education Center in Bartlett.

Chris Evert, the faculty adviser to the fishing club, said when he formed the club, the response from the students surprised him.

"This is much bigger than I thought," Evert said. "We had both boys and girls sign up."

Evert said the decision to try ice fishing was based on the students' requests.

"The kids all asked to go ice fishing," he said. "That was good for me because I love ice fishing."

The event was conducted in a safe and controlled environment, according to Evert. He said that while ice would need to be four inches thick, ice on the lake was closer to 11 inches. Students attending were also dressed for the colder weather, though Evert said the temperature was ideal.

Evert said the fishing club, which currently has more than 50 registered members, will continue to plan events through the winter and spring. He said, ideally, he would like to form a competitive bass fishing team.
