Chicago artist Faheem Majeed to speak Feb. 13 at College of DuPage

Renowned local builder and artist Faheem Majeed discusses how his work is inspired by his neighborhood and surrounding areas at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, in the Playhouse Theatre of the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

Majeed's lecture coincides with the college's celebration of Black History Month and is part of the college's Visiting Artist Series, designed to provide opportunities for the community to interact with leaders in the fields of contemporary arts, design and culture.

A resident of Chicago's South Shore neighborhood, Majeed's work transforms everyday materials such as particleboard, scrap metal and wood, and discarded signs and billboards into pieces that speak to larger issues of civic-mindedness, community activism and institutional racism. He was the inaugural artist-in-residence for University of Chicago's Arts in Public Life Initiative (2012) and has been an artist-in-residence at MANA Contemporary Chicago (2014) and Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (2015).

Majeed's Feb. 13 lecture coincides with his solo show, "Unite," in the MAC's Cleve Carney Art Gallery, which runs through April 7. Visit www.clevecarneygallery.org for more on the exhibit.
