Schaumburg Library hosts Black History Month programs

Various programs honoring Black History Month will take place in February at the Schaumburg Township District Library's locations in Schaumburg and Hanover Park.

Programs for children begin with "Art Studio" from 4 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Craft Room of the Schaumburg Library, 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg. Children ages 6 to 9 are invited to make art inspired by African-American artist Alma Thomas.

Children ages 5 to 8 can read and discuss "Trombone Shorty" by Troy Andrews from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Craft Room.

Tweens ages 9 to 12 can learn about Madame CJ Walker, who created specialized products for African-American hair and became a self-made millionaire. The program, "DIY Spa," will take place from 4 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Craft Room of the Schaumburg Library.

Mae C. Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space, will be featured in the "Out of this World" tween program from 4 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Hanover Park Branch Library, 1266 Irving Park Road.

Adults are invited to attend "Discussing Race and Current Events with your Kids" from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, in the Rasmussen North Room of the Schaumburg Library.
