Winter Activities at Or Shalom

Attention all poker lovers! All are invited to attend the Congregation Or Shalom winter fundraiser - a poker tournament being held on Saturday, January 20. Check-in begins at 6 p.m. and the fun begins at 6:45 p.m., with "Cards in the Air" at 7 p.m. A Super Bowl Square Raffle will also be held. Bar food, wine and beer are included. In advance, the fee for the evening is $110, while it goes up to $135 at the door. Those who preregister will receive 500 extra chips! Invite your friends! In accordance with celebrating this New Year for the Trees, "Taking Care of the Environment" is the Tu B'Shevat-related theme of the PJ Library activity taking place on Sunday, January 21, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Spend the afternoon making the world a more beautiful place by volunteering with the PJ Library, jBaby Chicago and the Jewish United Fund (JUF)'s TOV Volunteer Network while working with crafts, and enjoying snacks and fun performance with Miss Aimee. Explore contemporary ethical concerns through a Jewish lens by taking part in "Dilemmas of Today" with Or Shalom's Rabbi Margolis on Thursday, January 18, from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the temple. The fee is $18.

A timely program about cybersecurity will be presented at the temple on Wednesday, January 24, at 7 p.m., by Assistant State's Attorney (ASA) Scott Turk who works in the Lake County State's Attorney's Cyber and White-Collar Division. This presentation will cover child predators, sexting, Snapchat, Facebook and other apps kids use to hide information on their cell phones and tablets. Learn to talk to kids about making smart, safe choices. Turk worked as an ASA in the cybersecurity department over the past 10 years. While there, his expertise has involved the prosecution of white collar felonies including drugs, cybercrimes, sex offenses, felony trafficking, domestic violence, juvenile misdemeanors and traffic cases. Prior to joining the state's attorney's office, Turk also worked as a software developer and a certified public accountant (CPA). This program is free of charge.

The Or Shalom Book Club will meet again on Wednesday, February 7, at 7 p.m., to discuss Waking Lions by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. Discussion will be facilitated by Rachel Kamin. The next meeting will be on May 3. Both club meetings are free of charge.

Jews have played a big part in American musical history. Cantorial Soloist Laurie Akers will discuss this "Jewish Legacy on Broadway," exploring the history of Jewish composers on Broadway along with a fun mix of music by Jewish composers. This program will be held at the temple on Thursdays, February 8 and February 22. The fee is $18.
