Library has suggestions for the new year

"Cheers to the New Year, and another chance for us to get it right."

Talk show host and actress Oprah Winfrey's words reflect the optimism many of us feel the first few weeks of January. If getting it "right" is on your resolution list, consider the Schaumburg Township District Library as a jumping off point.

Whether you want to be a better parent or spouse in 2018, learn a language, discover new places, make a difference, make new friends, meet authors or fellow readers, find a job, grow your business, learn about history, cooking, art, travel, computers, genealogy or healthy living, the library has the programs and resources you need. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Most people know the library has books and movies, but you might be surprised to learn it also has a Digital Production Studio, where teens and adults can make videos using state-of-the-art cameras and editing equipment, as well as a green screen with countless backgrounds. Use it to promote your business, interview Grandpa, or create a school project.

Parents may be familiar with the library's kidsZone, but did you know we also have play groups and story times where parents can get to know other local parents as their children play and learn?

kidsZone also provides a plethora of free, fun programs in which children can learn about art, science, history and worldwide cultures. To help children boost their reading skills and confidence, the library regularly offers "Read to a Dog" sessions at all three library locations. Let the Schaumburg Township District Library help you be the best parent you can be with opportunities and resources for your children.

Business owners, managers and jobseekers will all find a host of ways to make 2018 a stellar year by attending programs and workshops listed in the "Business and Careers" section of the library's Guide.

Led by professionals from Illinois workNet, SCORE and other organizations, workshops help jobseekers write resumes and cover letters, as well as enhance their interview skills. Business owners and leaders have the opportunity to learn about marketing, taxes, hiring quality employees and more in free library programs.

Is 2018 the year to focus on a healthier you? Come to the library for free blood pressure, cholesterol and osteoporosis screenings, discover yoga or meditation, or attend informational programs led by doctors, dentists, chiropractors and alternative medicine doctors.

Ask questions and learn healthy lifestyle practices that may enhance your quality of life. And don't forget about books. Stroll through the health and wellness book stacks, beginning with the 613s, where you'll find titles on exercise and healthy eating, and continuing to the 617s. Or, ask a reference librarian to help you find a specific topic of interest.

If you're ready to grow your mind this year, visit the library's website at www.SchaumburgLibrary.org and scroll over "E-Library" at the top, then click on "Online Learning" - your key to a world of knowledge on countless topics.

For technical or career skills, peruse Gale Courses, LyndaLibrary, Treehouse or Safari Books online. All are free to Schaumburg Township District Library cardholders. If you want to learn a new language from the comfort of your home or office, try Mango Languages, which offers online tutorials for more than 70 languages; or Pronunciator, which not only teaches languages, but also invites you to join a live chat to practice your newly acquired skills.

How about having more fun in 2018? Check out the library's bus trips to theaters, museums, historic sites, shopping areas, cultural sites, botanic gardens, boat tours and special events. Many trips include a restaurant meal. Look under the "Bus Trips" section of the library's Guide and get ready to explore, have fun and make friends.

A new year has begun. What will you do with it? The possibilities are endless with a little help from your friends at the Schaumburg Township District Library.
