Signal Hill, NSDAR awards funding to Bacone College Project

The Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, of Barrington recently held its December meeting and holiday luncheon at Makray Memorial Golf Club.

The group was honored to host the current Illinois State Regent, Gloria Flathom, as both guest and presenter. Flathom's topic was "Until You Spread Your Wings, You Have No Idea How Far You Can Fly," which brought the chapter members up to date on new and continuing programs available through the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution.

One program in particular that is sponsored at the national level is raising money to improve the kitchen equipment and student union area at Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Flathom updated the attendees on the progress being made for this Native American college, and then advised of the next hurdle, the need for a specific piece of equipment that would cost about $4,600. At the end of the presentation, the Native American Issues Committee chairman from Signal Hill, Patti Matecki, along with current Chapter Regent Deb Edlund, presented Flathom with a check for $5,000 from the chapter.

The Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, raises funds throughout the year and distributes to 501 (c) (3) organizations, whose missions support DAR's mission of education, historic preservation, patriotism, conservation and Native American issues.

The chapter was founded in 1972 and is dedicated to preserving history, promoting patriotism, conservation and historic awareness in our community, and securing America's future through better education for children.

Membership is established through approval of documentation of direct lineage from an American Revolutionary War Patriot.
