John Koziol to be sworn in as Mount Prospect Police Chief

Recently appointed Mount Prospect Police Chief John Koziol will be officially sworn in to the position at the village board meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3. A reception welcoming Chief Koziol will be held prior to the meeting from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the village hall community room, 50 S. Emerson St. The public is invited to attend.

Koziol served as police chief for the Village of Palatine for 12 years, from 2002 to 2014, rising up through the ranks of the department, starting there as a patrolman in 1985. He held several positions with the Palatine Police Department including Deputy Chief of Field Operations, Commander, Sergeant and more.

Koziol has a bachelor of science in law enforcement administration from Western Illinois University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia and the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville. Since leaving the village of Palatine in 2014, Koziol has served as a police officer with the village of Inverness.

A nationwide search was completed in November to seek the most qualified candidate.

"John showed the selection team he is genuinely committed to law enforcement leadership," said Village Manager Michael Cassady. "Both John and I learned from longtime Palatine Chief Jerry Bratcher, a great leader and mentor. John has honed those critical management and interpersonal skills and will bring immediate value to our high performing leadership team in Mount Prospect."

"I am extremely honored to have been selected for this position," Koziol said. "I've always known the men and women of the Mount Prospect Police Department to be 'Real Police.' For that reason, they already have my respect. I know I must still earn their respect and look forward to doing that in the coming months," stated Koziol. "I come from a police family and despite being an administrator for nearly half my career I am a cop at heart."
