Wheaton church to offer 'Longest Night' service Dec. 21

Recognizing that the holidays are not always a time of joy and cheer, Wheaton's Gary United Methodist Church will offer a "Longest Night" service for those who are struggling and need to take a break from the hurried pace of the season.

Held on winter solstice, the longest night of the year, the service will provide an opportunity to remember missing loved ones, share our hurting places with God or simply relax and decompress from the stresses of the season. The evening will include beautiful music, prayer, candles and scripture.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21. All are welcome, regardless of church affiliation. Ample parking is available in the church's lot and on surrounding streets.

Located just north of downtown Wheaton at 224 N Main St., Gary United Methodist Church is an active, mission-oriented congregation with deep roots in the community going back over 160 years.

Known for vitalizing and inspiring worship services, the church incorporates a vibrant music program that offers choral, instrumental and bell ensembles. Programs are available to help children grow and learn together, and the church's youth programs are exciting and challenging. Engaging and energetic educational and fellowship activities help adults grow in their faith and generate lasting friendships. The church also operates a preschool that provides a quality and safe Christian environment for the children of the community.
