Aurora Public Library kicks off Winter Reading Program for youth

'Tis the season to be reading! The Aurora Public Library will be offering two reading challenges - one for children and one for teens. Both will run from Dec. 15 to Jan. 31.

The children's level of Winter Reading will require children to complete a fun reading log with levels which they color in as they progress. Upon completing five hours of reading, they will win a prize! Children may complete as many logs as they like.

The teen level will feature simple logs asking teens which books they have read. For each log that they turn in at the library, they can receive a small chocolate candy. If teens read a total of 250 books or more, the teen librarians will dye their hair a funky color - chosen by the teens!

Winter Reading participants may log their reading progress by using paper logs distributed at the library, or they may track their reading online through the Beanstack application. By logging through Beanstack, participants will help contribute to a charitable sponsorship.

Billionaire investor and "Shark Tank" personality Mark Cuban has announced his sponsorship of the inaugural Beanstack Winter Reading Challenge in support of local libraries.

Cuban has challenged close to 100 libraries all over the country and in South Korea, to meet a collective goal of reading at least one million minutes and 50,000 books during the month of January. If achieved, Cuban pledges to donate $25,000 to First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise that provides new books, learning materials, and other essentials to children in need.

He also will give $10,000 for top-performing libraries to use for their community programs or donate to nonprofit organizations in their area.

Winter Reading participants may sign up online at www.aurorapubliclibrary.org or at any of the library's locations. The West Branch is located at 233 S. Constitution Drive, the Santori Library is located at 101 S. River St., and the Eola Road Branch is located at 555 S. Eola Road.

Happy reading!
