Solo art show featuring Susan Anne Russell opens at Woodstock Opera House

Susan Anne Russell will be exhibiting her paintings in a 2018 solo show at the historic Woodstock Opera House.

The Opera House was restored to its Steamboat Gothic elegance over two decades ago, as it continues to be the crown jewel in town. Built in 1889, the Woodstock Opera House is a cultural center where the fine and performing arts thrive. The Opera House is an ideal venue for Russell, since she continually combines the disciplines of art and performance. Having graduated from School of the Art Institute in performance and admitted to the fine arts program on her paintings, she feels right at home at the Woodstock Opera House.

The town of Woodstock comes to life during the holiday season with its charming cobblestone streets, antique shops, and horse-drawn carriages. Woodstock is the perfect setting for the show entitled "Reaching for the Sublime." Much of her paintings are influenced by French Impressionists from the 19th century. Her inspirations include the artists Corot and Monet.

Russell has recently exhibited her work in many venues in Lake Forest and in Chicago. She is looking forward to participating in a number of major shows inclusive of Miami Spectrum. She is author of "Exposing Yourself to the Performing Arts." The textbook is internationally housed in museums and libraries, inclusive of Harvard, Yale and Oxford. In the book, Susan recounts her days of studying ballet as a young girl. With this in mind, she pays tribute to the great ballet "Swan Lake" in one of her paintings that she will display at the upcoming show.

Russell will be exhibiting many of her landscape paintings at the solo show in the Opera House. Living on a small lake, she has formed a bond with the swans that migrate in the summer and autumn. "They may have flown away now that winter is arriving, but I have locked their beauty and elegance on canvas."

Russell has sold her work to collectors in Italy and the U.S. She has been granted a number of solo shows throughout her artistic career including a solo show at the Adler Mansion and at Oxala in the Pilsen Art District in Chicago. Russell loves to find the beauty in the natural world and inspiration from the spiritual world.

The reception for "Reaching for The Sublime" will be Saturday, Jan. 6, in the community room at the Woodstock Opera House, 121 W. Van Buren St. in Woodstock. Parking is available in back. This event is open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. Appetizers and refreshments will be served.
