South Elgin electronics recycling drop-off to close

One of three Kane County electronics recycling locations will close this month. The Electronics Recycling Drop-off site at 735 Martin Drive in South Elgin at the old Public Works building is set to close permanently as of Friday, Dec. 29.

The county and its electronics recycling contractor, eWorks Electronics Services, have partnered with the village of South Elgin, which hosted the site, since September 2016.

Because South Elgin Public Works staff are now located at another building, they are not able to continue to provide assistance with forklifting the materials into the trucks, and so the site has to be closed.

Kane County's other two locations will remain open. They are in West Dundee and Batavia, open 40 hours a week during the hours listed below.

• Batavia, 517 E. Fabyan Parkway, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.

• West Dundee Public Works, 900 Angle Tarn, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Kane County Recycles will continue to offer electronics collection events scheduled on Saturdays throughout 2018, with the first one scheduled for Jan. 13.

There is a fee of $25 to $25 to recycle TVs and monitors - all types, flat screen or glass tube. All other accepted items - including computers, cameras, keyboards, cellphones, holiday lights, printers, cords and cables, VCRs and DVD players - are free to drop off.

Visit the County website at www.countyofkane.org/recycling for details and the complete list of event dates.
